Japanese armor has a history stretching back more than a thousand years. From the Heian period onward, armor developed not only as protection for the warrior, but also as an extraordinary expression of Japanese craftsmanship and aesthetic sensibility.

The great O-yoroi armor of the Heian period brought together the work of highly skilled artisans in metalwork, lacquer, textiles, and intricate braiding. Some of the finest surviving examples are preserved today as National Treasures of Japan.

This tradition is particularly visible in Kyoto-style armor, known for its elaborate metal fittings and refined ornamentation. Descended from the prestigious tradition of O-yoroi, its brilliance was never decoration alone — it expressed status, artistry, and the exceptional skill of the craftsmen who created it.

This one-fifth-scale kabuto carries that spirit into a form made for contemporary life. Its richly detailed metalwork reflects a tradition in which armor was not simply made to protect, but to embody beauty, dignity, and craftsmanship.

Designed by Hiroko Hara for Goshiki.
